IF IT’S IN THE MISC, IT MUST BE TRUE. RIGHT?

picture-1Vassar’s newspaper published a developing story about this Creative Writing saga. If only we could get someone on the inside to Twitter the meeting. In any case, if I ran a business, I would trim the fat off of the largest department, that being the English Dept; but what’s after that?  Running a college as if a business is an entirely different rabbit hole that I don’t mind essaying another time.

Question: What percentage of a university’s operating cost is siphoned from interest earned on an endowment? With Harvard’s 8 billion dollar loss, what might its course of action be? What’s going on in Harvard Square?

“At a faculty meeting tomorrow, the first item on the agenda will be an announcement from the English Department about the creation of a new correlate sequence in creative writing. “It’s sort of like announcing that you’re serving breakfast on the Titanic,” said one faculty member. “The irony is extraordinary.”
The irony comes in light of an alumnae/i effort currently underway to stop across-the-board budget cuts from dismantling Vassar’s creative writing courses after Dean of the Faculty Jonathan Chenette met with the Department on Dec. 8 to discuss his desire to cut two adjunct English faculty members.

  1. uninformed morons...

About a third of Vassar’s budget comes from the endowment. Additionally, we’ll have expect that tuition revenue, which makes up about half of the budget, and annual fund giving, which makes up the rest, will be lower this year due to the financial situation of families and alums.
